As if on cue, there has been a flurry of news about City Hall’s revitalization plans for the lower Main, which you can find here, here, and, en français, here. In brief, the city plans to expropriate the entire block at St. Laurent and St. Catherine, and to replace it with the infinitely snazzier Quartier des spectacles building shown above. Shiny, isn’t it?
Meanwhile, the Montreal Gazette reports that Quebec hasn’t spent a single dime on the construction of new social housing since 1994, despite the transfer of $187 million by the federal government for exactly this purpose. Currently, 20,000 Montreal families are languishing on the waiting list for existing units, a number that has tripled since 2001.
It certainly is shiny, though.
